Message from the Executive Administration Team

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Wembley Primary is a hive of activity this week! The Year 1-3 students are having fun at In-term Swimming. The weather has been fantastic and their courage and engagement in the pool is excellent. Parents, please ensure all items of clothing and property are labelled.

WPS, 2020 finalists! Mrs Snow, Miss Doig and Year 5 students Oliver and Bella attended the 2020 Governor’s School STEM Awards at Government House today to represent all students and staff at Wembley PS.

We were thrilled to attend the ceremony and be named as one of the top STEM schools in the state. Unfortunately we didn’t win. Congratulations to the winners, Brookman Primary School.

The Year 5 students are prepared and eagerly await the Astronomy Night on Thursday night. All 113 students look forward to a presentation from an astronomer and star gazing with high powered telescopes. Fingers crossed for a clear night!

Tomorrow we will host two groups of 2021 kindergarten students and their parents at the annual transition morning. The transition meetings will conclude next Wednesday with two more sessions.

Teaching and Learning

The Year 4s were delighted to meet the award-winning local author, Suzanne Lowe, this week. They are currently reading Suzanne’s first novel, The Pirate Princess and the Golden Locket and are loving it. “It is an adventurous tale with many surprises which keep you on the edge of your seat.”

Students devised questions to interview Suzanne and read their favourite part of the novel to her. Suzanne showed students her Readers’ Favourite Book Award Medal, shared her passion for writing and gave them an insight into the writing process.

Suzanne has definitely inspired our students to follow their dreams. She is a determined, resilient and creative person who never gave up on her desire to be a published author.

Quality Learning Environment

On Friday 20 November, 20 students participated in the Junior Talent Quest…. and boy did they have talent! The Year 3/4s presented a diverse program of performances on violin, guitar, piano, singing and we even saw the beginnings of Wembley’s very own rock band. Ms Nan Sheppard and Ms Christine Power adjudicated these lovely performances and chose three highly commended performers to participate at this week’s Senior Talent Quest. They included Claire T who played piano beautifully, Neeraja who serenaded us with her singing, and Erik, Denver and Stuart in their rocking rendition of White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army.

It really was a wonderful opportunity to see students being courageous, performing for their classmates. Well done to all performers and to our young audience who were courteous and respectful. We can’t wait to see the senior students performing this Friday at 1:30pm – just a reminder that unfortunately no parents can attend.

Parents and community members are invited to join students, staff and special guests at the Faction naming ceremony on Thursday 10 December on the school oval at 9:15am. Please bring a hat and water bottle. Local Elder, Neville Collard, will open the ceremony with Welcome to Country. The WPS concert band will perform and Year 6 student change-agents will speak about the process and their action learning that led to this significant change.

Collaborate, Connect, Communicate.

Yours in learning

Canteen Closed

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, our canteen will be CLOSED for two weeks from Monday 23 November  (Weeks 7 and 8).

This decision wasn’t made lightly and I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

We will re-open with a limited menu in Week 9 before closing in Week 10 for the final scrub down before the summer holidays.

Canteen will open for orders on Monday 7 December to preorder Sushi in Week 9.

Kind regards,

Genna Stephenson, Canteen Manager

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop would like to advise that it will be closing as of Friday 4 December for stocktaking purposes.

Hurry and place your orders online for any uniform items you may need before the end of Term!

We are still waiting on shorts to arrive from overseas in certain sizes, which we are crossing our fingers to have by the start of the year.  Ordering will reopen on 1 February 2021 (Term 1).

Another reminder that we still have plenty of bathers to sell for your summer water-crazy kids.  Please remember to order one size bigger, as they are a smaller fit.

Warm regards,

Nat Ramsay and Suse Havlin, Uniform Shop Coordinators

Library News

All library books are due back at the end of next week – Week 8.

Book Club: The final issue for the year, Issue #8 closed yesterday.  Thank you for supporting your school by ordering from Scholastic Book Club.  With each order placed, we receive reward points which enables us to select fabulous resources.

A huge thank you to Sylvia Tan – our sole Book Club parent helper this year.  We will miss the Tan family at Wembley as this is their last year.

If anyone would like to volunteer to help with Book Club next year, I would really appreciate it.  It simply entails unpacking the order when it comes and sorting into class groups! Ideally – if we had two volunteers it takes about 2 or 3 hours, twice a term!  It’s always fun and coffee is always served.

Many thanks

Jill Jordan

Recycling

ALL recycling stations will be removed and unavailable from the end of Week 8.  This includes coffee pods, soft plastics, batteries, toothpaste etc.
