Message from the Executive Administration Team

Dear parents and caregivers

Welcome back to Term 4! I hope you had an enjoyable time together as families, taking the opportunity to reconnect and recharge after a busy term. I had a wonderful break with my own family, spending a week away in the south west of our wonderful state.

As a staff, we head into this final term of the school year with positivity, recharged and ready for an excellent end to the school year. The staff have spent the past two days engaged in professional learning. Our time has been spent on exploring new ways to approach STEAM and Digital Technologies in the classroom, analysing student achievement data to plan responsively for teaching and learning and refreshing our understanding of how to support students with English as an Additional Language.

As students emerge from holidays, it can be hard to readjust to the structure of school. You can assist your child with this transition by reinstating routines in the morning and evening, particularly in relation to sleep. Prioritising sleep is so important, allowing your child to come to school ready to learn. Holidays usually mean lots of treats and foods that might not normally be part of your child’s diet. It’s important to transition back to healthy foods in your child’s lunch box to assist with keeping your child balanced and focused while at school. I’m sure it’s been lots of fun in the holidays and we look forward to hearing all about their stories on the return to school tomorrow morning!

Important Dates

This term, there are a number of important school events that should be highlighted in your personal calendars. This list is not exhaustive so please check the school calendar on the school website, which is updated constantly with the latest information including incursions and excursions.

Sun Smart

As the weather heats up, we would appreciate your support in helping your child be sun smart. We have a ‘No hat, No play’ policy from September-May. Please ensure your child has a school hat (wide-brimmed) every day. I ask you not to send your child to school with a cap as these will not adequately protect your child and they are not part of the school dress code. I would also encourage you to apply sunscreen before school every day. We have a sunscreen pump in every classroom and teachers will remind students to re-apply before break times but please note that teachers can not apply the sunscreen for them.

Tuning in to Kids – Tweens

An opportunity to join the emotion coaching program with Penrhos College School Psychologist Tracy Hart is on offer this term for parents of students aged 9-12 years old. Starting next Wednesday night, this five week small group program costs $150, which has been partly subsidised by the school. The feedback from the first group who attended this course has been overwhelmingly positive.

‘A really fantastic workshop that I hope is available to many more families’

‘The content is practical, helpful and really helped to reframe how I look at and think about the big emotions of our young kids’

‘An invaluable course which has made a real difference to our family life’.

‘I enjoyed the small group setting and learning together’

I encourage you to take up the opportunity for this research-backed program developed by the University of Melbourne and facilitated by Tracy. It will help you to respond to anger and conflict, tune in to your child’s common worries and upsets and help your child to regulate their emotions. Please email Tracy – hartt@penrhos.wa.edu.au this week to register.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

Wembley competed in the West Coast Interschool Athletics Competition in Week 9 and 10 of last term. Week 9 events included students from Yr 3-6 participating in long-jump, throwing and 400m/800m races, while Week 10 involved over 80 students from Yr 1-6 participating in sprints, team games and relays. Wembley performed extremely well across the two days eventually winning the championship shield, beating second placed Floreat by 26 points. In doing so, making it 10 consecutive years of winning the shield.

Wembley had several students who achieved individual honours:

Lucy G – Yr 3 Runner-Up Champion Girl

Leo V – Yr 3 Runner-Up Champion Boy

Erin C – Yr 4 Champion Girl

Ben T – Yr 4 Runner-Up Champion Boy

Sansa T – Yr 5 Champion Girl

Mitchell P- Yr 5 Champion Boy

Lacy P – Yr 6 Runner-Up Champion Boy

Isla A- New record: Yr 6 Girls 100m

It is also worth mentioning that Sansa in Year 5 achieved something that as far back as our records show has never been achieved at Wembley PS.  Sansa won Champion Girl at our Faction swimming and athletics carnivals as well as the interschool swimming and athletics carnivals; and also won our Faction cross-country and Interschool cross-country events. An unbelievable achievement.

Well done to all our Interschool competitors. They represented Wembley superbly. Thank you to all the parents who helped throughout the term and on the day.

P&C Canteen Services and Volunteer Survey

Did you know that on a busy day, our Hungry Lion canteen team may need to fill more than 300 lunch orders? Wow! What a massive effort.

The P&C will soon have to make some big decisions about the future of the canteen, including whether or not we invest in renovations and significant upgrades so the canteen can continue to meet the needs of our growing school community. But before we do that, we need your help.

If you have not yet filled out the P&C’s survey on volunteering and the canteen services, we would really appreciate you taking five minutes to respond. We will use these responses to help us direct the future of the canteen and P&C services.

All families are encouraged to respond, even if you do not regularly use the canteen!

Please complete the survey here: https://forms.gle/1wwpbczBdojS7ZUx9

The survey will be open until Friday 22 October.

Canteen prep chef job opportunity:

Do you know a prep-chef looking for a new opportunity? Unfortunately, the lovely Nicole had to unexpectedly step down from her role over the holidays due to health reasons, so the P&C is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced prep chef to support Genna in the canteen. The role is currently being advertised on Seek: https://www.seek.com.au/job/54284085  The P&C would like to thank Nicole for being a valuable part of the team over the past year.

Canteen

Sadly, Nicole has left us  and we are advertising for a superstar to step into her role, but in the meantime we need more help than ever before.

We would love to see our roster fill up quickly this term so we can concentrate on delicious and nutritious meals to fill our children’s bellies.

Looking at it simply, if every family just did one shift a term, our roster would be full. That’s just two hours or three hours in a whole term.

**Year 6 parents with 2021 Leavers – this could be your last chance to hang out with your child for the rest of their school years!!

**Grab a bunch of friends and come in to fill a shift together. It’s a fun vibe when you’re all helping out and catching up at the same time. Coffee and sweet treats guaranteed.

Please, if you could check your calendars to see if there is a day where you could pull on a hat and apron for a short time, we guarantee that there will be a happy dance, cheering and high fives in the kitchen!!

No doubt, your child will be doing a happy dance too!

Please sign up to the roster here

We DESPERATELY need two more volunteers this FRIDAY 10.40-1.30.

Also, one person for the 10.40-1.30 shift tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday.

Thank you

Genna, Canteen Manager
